Community Support and Identified Need

Levels of need within the Riverside community

More than half of Riverside pupils live in areas ranked among the most deprived nationally. Families commonly experience overlapping challenges, including housing instability, unemployment, financial hardship, health inequalities and limited access to local services.
These pressures directly affect children’s readiness to learn, confidence, physical health and emotional wellbeing. They also increase the demand for targeted support, early intervention and trusted spaces where families feel able to engage.
The school’s role extends beyond education to help address these barriers early, reducing escalation into crisis services and improving long‑term outcomes for children and families.

Existing community support delivered by the school

Riverside already delivers a broad range of community‑focused support, including:
  • Pastoral and family support for households facing housing, employment or financial insecurity
  • Access to parenting programmes and family learning opportunities
  • Support to engage with health services, including mental health and wellbeing provision
  • Holiday provision, active wraparound childcare and enrichment opportunities
  • Targeted interventions to support children's emotional regulation, speech and language development, and smooth transitions between phases of education
This work is preventative in nature, aiming to support families early and reduce the likelihood of difficulties escalating.
However, delivery is increasingly constrained by a lack of suitable space. The existing hall is undersized and already used at or beyond capacity throughout the school day, limiting the ability to expand support or host additional services.

Why space matters

Safe, flexible and accessible space is critical to the effective delivery of community support. Without it:
  • Activities are restricted or oversubscribed
  • External partners are unable to deliver on‑site interventions
  • Families face barriers to access, particularly outside standard school hours
  • Opportunities for preventative and early‑help work are limited
The Community Sports Hall will address these constraints by providing dedicated, high‑quality space that can support a wide range of uses, including physical activity, family engagement, workshops, therapies and community‑led programmes.

Community stories and lived experience

The need for additional space is informed by lived experience within the Riverside community. Families supported by the school often face multiple, interlinked challenges, requiring coordinated and sustained intervention.
Through pastoral support, partnership working and targeted programmes, Riverside has helped families move towards greater stability, confidence and independence. The new sports hall facility will allow this support to be delivered more effectively and to reach more families in a safe, dignified and accessible way.
