We have three Year 1 classes at Riverside.
As the children move from Reception into Year 1 they are introduced to the National Curriculum but learning remains very practical with lots of different learning experiences.
Children throughout the school are involved in the creative development of their Learning Challenge. Each week the children set themselves a smaller Learning Challenge question to help drive their learning forward.
The planned themes for Year 1 are outlined below. Due to the nature of the Learning Challenge Curriculum, these themes could change.
Term 1: Who is the bravest person I know?
Term 2: Why can’t a meerkat live at the North Pole?
Term 3: Why would a dinosaur not be a good pet?
Term 4: Where is our nearest capital city?
Term 5: What would aliens think of life on earth?
Term 6: What should the 3 little pigs have used to build their houses?
In Year 1 children have a daily phonics, literacy and numeracy session. At Riverside we use the Letters and Sounds phonics scheme. Click here to find out how you can help your child with their phonics. Children’s phonic knowledge is assessed using the National Phonics screening check in the Summer Term.
The reading scheme that we use here is the Oxford Reading Tree. You can click here for a link to Oxford Owl where there are lots of ebooks, games and ideas to support your child with their reading.
We follow the Nelson scheme of work for handwriting.
