Year One

We have three Year 1 classes at Riverside.

As the children move from Reception into Year 1 they are introduced to the National Curriculum but learning remains very practical with lots of different learning experiences.

Children throughout the school are involved in the creative development of their Learning Challenge. Each week the children set themselves a smaller Learning Challenge question to help drive their learning forward.

The planned themes for Year 1 are outlined below. Due to the nature of the Learning Challenge Curriculum, these themes could change.

Term 1: What is special about me?
Term 2: Can you take a meerkat to the the North Pole?
Term 3: Did Dinosaurs live in Hereford?
Term 4: Is mud glorious?
Term 5: How do you destroy a house like this?
Term 6: What can Paddington Bear do in London?

In Year 1 children have a daily phonics, literacy and numeracy session.  At Riverside we use the Letters and Sounds phonics schemeClick here to find out how you can help your child with their phonics. Children’s phonic knowledge is assessed using the National Phonics screening check in the Summer Term.

The reading scheme that we use here is the Oxford Reading Tree.  You can click here for a link to Oxford Owl where there are lots of ebooks, games and ideas to support your child with their reading.

Please read our welcome back to school letter here.

We follow the Nelson scheme of work for handwriting.
